This course outlines the basic concepts of the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach, common misconceptions about the SOA approach, and fundamentals for successfully implementing an SOA approach. It addresses SOA development and challenges from the perspectives of the service developer, the application developer, and the infrastructure developer.
The course also addresses potential issues in leveraging legacy components as services. It outlines a method "Service Migration and Reuse Technique" (SMART) that helps organizations to develop a realistic strategy for the migration of legacy components to a specific Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) target. SMART performs a set of analyses that take into account both the business needs of the organization and the technical content of the organization's existing systems portfolio.
Exercises are provided throughout the course to provide a concrete context for the issues.
