Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Governance Workshop

Governance for service-oriented architecture (SOA) environments provides a set of policies, rules, and enforcement mechanisms for developing, using, and evolving SOA assets and for analysis of their business value. Effective SOA governance can support the flexible authority structure, service-level-agreement-based incentives for service providers, and distributed ownership of systems and services that characterize SOA environments.

In the SEI SOA Governance Workshop, participants understand and devise a high level SOA governance plan and action items which can later be executed.

The SOA Governance Workshop is designed to be delivered in any setting, including at your site. It is also a natural complement to a workshop that the SEI offers on SOA Strategy.

Who should attend?

An organization considering an SOA environment in which

  • coordination and collaboration are needed across all of the communities involved in operation, development, and acquisition
  • contractors deal with service providers that offer service-level agreements (SLAs) in place of the familiar incentives of contractual obligation
  • the SOA-based system is distributed among infrastructure providers, service providers, and application developers

Topics

  • SOA governance policies and procedures
  • Design time versus runtime SOA governance
  • SOA governance roles and responsibilities

Coursework includes, lectures, and exercises.

Objectives

The SEI Governance Workshop helps organizations develop appropriate SOA
  • governance policies and procedures, including infrastructure versioning, service usage, and SLAs
  • governance roles and responsibilities, such as an SOA governance manager responsible for policy creation, approval, implementation, and enforcement
  • design-time governance, which involves, for example, rules for the development of services that align with business goals and offer the greatest benefit at the lowest risk
  • runtime governance, which, in part, involves the enforcement of rules to assure that services are executed legally and securely
