AADL in Practice Workshop

The AADL in Practice Workshop combines AADL training and an AADL modeling workshop to provide practical knowledge as well as an opportunity to practice skills in a realistic setting. This Workshop will transfer expertise to participants through an effective combination of training and mentoring during practice. Organizations seeking to increase likelihood of successful AADL modeling outcomes can utilize the AADL in Practice Workshop to reduce false starts and failures that are often attributed to the adoption of new language/tools.

The Workshop includes 2 components:

Modeling System Architectures using the Architecture Analysis and Design Language course

The 4.5 day course focuses on fundamental MBE concepts for engineering real-time, embedded software systems through defining and documenting software and system architecture and validating system quality attributes (also commonly referred to as dependability properties and non-functional behavior). This course consists of lectures, discussion, and exercises. Exercises are provided throughout the course to provide a concrete context for the issues. Modeling Workshop

This 2 day workshop guides the participants through application of AADL to an existing example problem or to a customized example based on an existing project of your choosing. This hands-on application, under the guidance of SEI AADL instructor/coach, eases the integration of classroom knowledge into your organization's everyday practice. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to create and analyze an AADL solution to a real-world problem.

  • individuals tasked with the validation of embedded, real-time system performance
  • technical managers, managers, and software/system architects who are looking for a solid overview of system and software modeling
  • individuals who make decisions about the development or acquisition of real-time, embedded systems


After successful completion of the AADL in Practice Workshop participants will have

  • understanding of core elements of the AADL
  • knowledge of quantitative validation of quality attributes through analysis of system architecture
  • practical AADL modeling experience
  • hands-on knowledge of AADL analysis best practices
  • practice AADL modeling skills in a concrete and practical setting


Modeling System Architectures using the Architecture Analysis and Design Language course

  • introduction to MBE and demonstration of its use in engineering software systems for application domains
  • description of different modeling perspectives (runtime, data view, etc., that support quantitative analysis of model)
  • introduction of the various AADL modeling constructs and demonstration of their use on application examples
  • demonstration of the structured incremental refinement of AADL models
  • modeling of software and its mapping to hardware: modeling of runtime software elements (processes, threads, subprogram, etc.), execution platform elements (processors, memory, devices, etc), and the mapping of software to the execution platform
  • modeling constructs to facilitate data analysis view such as data, subprograms, and subprogram calls
  • demonstration of the ability to model multi-modal systems
  • description of the mechanisms to organize the modeling of large-scale systems
  • hands-on modeling using AADL within the Eclipse environment

Modeling Workshop

  • review of existing example problem or customer-defined example problem
  • defining modeling and analysis objectives and the roles and activities
  • discuss practical modeling approaches informed by modeling and analysis objectives
  • create and analyze models under direction of instructor/coach
  • review/critique of the work produced
  • demonstrate application of AADL to the problem space and satisfaction of the modeling and analysis objectives


Materials provided:


Course participants should have fundamental knowledge in the areas of developing embedded real-time systems, software engineering, and architectures. Attendees should have working knowledge of a programming language and familiarity with a modeling language and the concept of abstraction.


The 4.5-day course and 2-day workshop will be scheduled to meet the needs of the host organization.
