Professional Background

Jim Smith is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at the Software Engineering Institute, where he works to improve the state of the practice for acquisition in the context of large, complex systems of systems. Jim has over 20 years of experience developing, acquiring, and fielding systems of systems. At the SEI, he has been an active contributor to the emerging systems of systems body of knowledge. He has authored numerous papers, reports, and conference presentations, and was a co-developer of the SEI's SoS NavigatorSM process and the Interoperable Acquisition tutorials.

In addition to a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Kansas University, Jim has a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College, and was a member of the Acquisition Professional community, with DAWIA Level-III certification in both the Program Management and Systems Planning, Research, Development, and Engineering career fields. Jim is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
