The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University conducts rigorous, empirical, objective, and innovative software research and development for defense and national security. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of War (DoW), the SEI leads the research and transition of software engineering, software acquisition, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence technologies. Established in 1984, the SEI is one of only 10 DoW-sponsored federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs). The only DoW-sponsored FFRDC chartered to improve the state-of-the-art and -practice in software engineering, the SEI routinely collaborates with academia, government, and industry.
