Innovation that supports our warfighters with research that advances software as a strategic advantage for national security since 1984

Software is a force multiplier for our warfighters, and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) delivers cutting-edge, rigorously tested, and difference-making software research, development and technology transition for rapid response needs and long-term support. Established in 1984, the SEI at Carnegie Mellon University is sponsored by the U.S. Department of War (DoW) as a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC). The SEI is the only DoW-sponsored FFRDC chartered to improve both software’s state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice. The SEI advances software for the warfighter by integrating artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, and software acquisition strategies for maximum impact.

We look forward to seeing you at the Space and Missile Defense (SMD) Symposium 2026!
